Steps

1
Done

Preheat oven to 350
In a large bowl cream together the sugar and the butter.

2
Done

Add in the eggs and beat until mixture is light and fluffy.

3
Done

Add in the almond extract.

4
Done

Stir in the flour and the baking powder until the mixture is smooth.

5
Done

Spread the mixture into a 13x9 buttered baking pan.

6
Done

Spoon the pie filling evenly into the cake mixture by dropping 4 spoonfuls evenly across the pan to have 16 spoonfuls.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 to 50 minutes or until golden or when a toothpick comes out clean.
The filling will sink into the cake while it is baking.

7
Done

To serve the cake :
Cut the cake into 12 or 16 pieces. Place the pieces bottom side up on your plates if you to want sprinkle them with some powdered sugar or put some whipped cream on top of them. I like mine cherry side up and topped with Vanilla Ice cream. YUM !

VARIATIONS
You can substitute any kind of canned fruit pie filling (or even homemade!) for the cherry filling.
I just choose a different flavor of extract sometimes to match the fruit.
